The design of the custom in the move was an attractive one for that time, but it was really and uncomfortable one that seemed so "raw" or "primitive," and clearly limited the mobility and actions of the characters. The artistic intent was to look very realistic and visually was credible for the time. However, in a modern version for a theater production what I would do would be a beautiful design in which the clothes simulated the tin design, very detailed designs in the custom to allow full mobility to the character so it can dances and sign. I would use a small head such as the ones used by College sports mascots to make it attractive, but that always allows the proper mobility to the character.
