The South was for slavery and the North was abolitionist for the most part. Slavery was important to southern economy and it was part of Southern life. This led to the Seccession of Southern states from the US and ultimately led to the Civil War. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments effectively abolished slavery after the civil war ended.
