The difficulty with treating someone with medication who also has dementia is that they are significantly more likely to either forget to take the medication or they are more likely to overdose on the medication as they may forget that they already took it. Its incredibly difficult for them to be compliant with a medical regimen. That is why many providers rely on caregivers assistance, request that the patient or the person responsible for the patient bring them in for medical treatment, or they opt for surgical solutions whenever possible.

In advocating for someone with dementia, your goal is ensuring they receive the care that is safest for them. Surgeries cary risk, and all people need a voice in deciding their own medical treatments.
