Witch event must happen for a case to be heard before the supreme court?

The Supreme Court of the United States decides to grant a hearing when a petition for Writ Certiorari is granted by four of the nine Justices. The Petition for Certiorari is a request that the court consider, review and hear the case, usually filed by the party who lost by decision of the lower court.
