How did tariffs give the north and economic advantage

Tariffs and other economic sanctions in the American economy provided the North with a leverage over the South due to the fact that it crippled their economy. With the essentially sole export being cotton, cutting the purchases of the product from major buyers ultimately left the South in destitute.
