In what way was the Byzantine Empire a departure from the Roman empire?

    The Byzantine empire used to be part of the Roman empire (its the eastern part of the Roman empire to be specific). Later, they had split with the Western Roman Empire because of a series of disagreements and the fact the empire was too big for any one person to control. That was how they had departed.
