Social norming research has revealed that people every so often believe that those appealing healthy behavior are in the minority when, in fact they are not. Health psychologists acknowledge that norms are important predictors of health behaviors in which for example the theory of planned behaviors discussed previously holds that health behaviors directly result from behavioral intentions that are composed of attitudes toward the specific action perceived behavioral control and subjective norms regarding the action. If people who smoke believe that smoking is normative, or if they believe that their friends do not believe that smoking is a norm, these people are less likely to change their behavior.
