House slaves (in the context of slavery in the US) were usually better treated - they had special skills that other slaves didn't have and were more valuable to the masters.
They often were taught to read and do accounting and could use this knowledge to secure a better position with their masters. They had a more secure livelyhood, were punished less and were treated better.
Many house slaves were children of the masters and were later freed and given property.
