How would higher tariffs on british goods protect american people

By encouraging Americans to produce and buy goods in America.

High tariffs made British goods more expensive which made American people more likely to look elsewhere or produce their own goods. By making goods and buying them in the US, Americans gained more independence from Great Britain allowing them to eventually become their own sovereign country.
