Panettone is the type of sweet bread loaf which originated in Milan and is traditionally eaten at Christmas in Italy and many other European countries.

Panettone is one of the symbols of Milan.

The word "panettone" is derived from the Italian word "panetto" meaning a small loaf cake. Adding the Italian suffix "-one" to the word "panetto" changed its meaning into "large cake".

Panettone became the country's leading Christmas sweet by the end of World War II because fierce competition between two Milanese bakers in baking the panettone led to an industrial production of the cake making it cheaper and available for everyone.
