The first national convention for presidential candidates was held in 1832 by the Democratic Party. Interestingly, the first convention was less about nominating a candidate for President. Andrew Jackson had the majority of the support. The convention was more focused on finding him a running mate for vice president. Eventually they would in Martin Van Buren.
