    The apparent cause of the odor in jail is maybe because of reverend hale the body odor or bathroom buckets. John Hale or commonly known as being Reverend hale, he was a Puritan pastor of Beverly, Massachusetts, during the Salem witch trials in 1692. He is also the naive witch-hunter, the intellectual who enters the play in Act I when Parris summons him to examine his daughter Betty.
