The book sounds serious because of the use of the word "hardscrabble." The tone seems to be a little eerie because the way the glass castle is described. It says that it is not sad or depressing so there is something positive there. The walls achieved this effect because it is glass and you would think that it is clear of what you think it would be, but it is actually positive.
