The biggest cost of the American Civil War was the social cost.

For many, the Civil War was a time, that could have completely shattered the United States as we know it and would probably lead to at least two distinct major powers in the North American continent.

However, the Civil war won by the North which wanted to retain the Union. However, this did not come at a small cost.

There are estimates of tens of thousands of soldiers and ordinary folks dying due to the war.

Families were completely shattered. Fathers and sons died, never to return home, leaving widows without much livelihoods.

No matter what the reason, the huge Social costs were the biggest burden on the population as a whole.
