The iceman may have been in the alps because he was traveling on foot and to get where he was going he needed to go through the alps. Plus back at the age of his time, people traveled on foot, and the alps are located in switzerland and the weather there is kinda cold year round so the iceman had no choice but to travel in the snowy weather through the alps
