States rights and federal government rights go in opposite directions. What strenghtens the states rights weakens the federal rights. One extreme would be to have a very weak federal government with the states being able to do whatever they wanted individually. This might sound good for states but would make for a divided country and and a weaker one and one could argue a less efficient one and likely one with some pretty severe human rights and minority rights violations. A super strong federal government weakens the people as big decisions as to the direction of the lives of the people throughout the land are made by people far away in washington DC who are more and more aloof and detached from the people.
