our entire income isn't taxed at the higher percentage - - only that amount in the highest tax bracket is taxed at the highest percentage. It's a sliding scale, not an absolute percentage. It's the fairest way of doing things. The people who need almost all of their income just to survive get taxed at an overall rate that's less than the people who have more disposable income.
