When the British considered that the US would have a more direct access to the Asian trading port they became minions of trouble. They had stopped slavery in their country in the mid-1800's and wanted it stopped in America. They got the Mexicans to consider going to war. However, once the transcontinental railroad was finished, the British backed off.
