In the short story writen by American author Charles Waddell Chesnutt "The Wife of His Youth", Liza Jane is described as an older woman with dark complexion who has being enslaved and has the dialect of an uneducated person but also portrayed as a loyal one, who maintains devotion and fidelity to her husband she hasn't seen in 25 years; it sparks the readers compassion and sympathy but also intrigue due to her persistence, determination and confidence which in the end is resolved to make sense, since Mr. Ryder is such person.
