Instrumental ties are relationships that are limited only to the achievement of a goal or some sort of a goal, that is, we make a connection with someone until the goal is reached. There is an example of developing relationships and trust between a doctor and a patient to successfully complete treatment, is instrumental ties. So it's a collaboration that only lasts until it reaches some realistic immediate goal.
