    Three Estates

    Explanation:

The French people, under the Old Regime, were divided into three estates:

    1. The First Estate - this consisted of the Clergy. They were concerned about religious-related activities and were comprised of the nuns, priest and monks. Some of them also came from noble families, and thus were categorized as "upper clergy."

    2. The Second Estate - this consisted of the "nobles" or the royal people. This status was regarded as higher than the other social classes. These people were exempted from the force labor and the salt tax.

    3. The Third Estate - this consisted of the "peasants" and the "bourgeoisie." Peasants were farmers who owned a limited land, while bourgeoisie were city people such as the craftsmen and merchants. A large population belonged to this group.
