Henry Clay believed that American democracy depended on "that great principle of compromise". What did he mean? Do you agree? Why?

    Henry Clay means that, for America to stand for what it has always believed to represent, which is freedom, it must be able to disapprove of slavery as a system.

    I do tend to agree with him in the sense that, you cannot claim that your country is the land of freedom (when the got independence newly, it was their popular slogan) while at the sametime subjudigating other group of people to slavery.

    Henry tried his best to establish the right of the so-called Five Civilized Tribes of Indians tohave access to their lands though he was not successful.
