    Paul Whiteman hired William Grant Still as an arranger.

    Explanation:

    Even though segregation was hugely prevalent in the early 1900's, William Grant Still worked as an arranger in pit orchestras for Paul Whiteman in the 1920's and 1930's. In the 30's, he worked as an arranger when he wrote for one of NBC Radio's popular broadcasts, Old Gold Show, by Paul Whiteman.
