William E. B. Du Bois was a famous American sociologist and a writer. He was the best spokesman for the rights of African Americans during the 20th century.

W. E. B. Du Bois referred to the term "double consciousness" for African Americans in his book named The Souls of Black Folk. "Double consciousness" can be defined as the internal conflicts which is experienced by any subordinate group in the society. It is looking into oneself by the perception of others.
