In general, when people voluntarily self report, the results obtained are more likely to be biased. This is true due to two important reasons. First, people who are likely to volunteer are also likely to share certain characteristics, which might mean that they are not truly representative of the population at large. The second reason is that people tend to self report in a biased way, in order to present themselves in a positive light.
