Answer: They thought that it would improve society. Long story short it didn't.
Explanation: Some reasons are:
They thought it would make them wealthy Many did it for religious reasons Many thought it would strengthen the economy Some thought it would improve health Finally, it actually made things worse and created problems we still suffer from today.
