Assume some guy named Spano and a woman named Bagley are stranded on an island. Two tasks must be done: fishing and building shelters. Assume that Bagley can catch one fish every 10 hours and build one thatched hut every 20 hours. While Spano (who is a bit on the clumsy side) can catch one fish every 15 hours and build a thatched hut every 45 hours. Now assume that during the year both Bagley and Spano each work 1800 hours)

    In completion of your question:

Calculate how many fish they can catch and how many huts they can build on their own in one year

    Answer:

Bagley can catch 180 fish and build 90 huts.

Spano can catch 120 fish and build 40 huts

    Explanation:

If Bagley spends all her time just catching fish in one year she can catch 180 fish (1800 hrs/10 hrs per fish), on the other hand if she spends all her time making huts she can make 90 huts (1800hrs / 20 hrs per hut) in one year. If Spano spends all his time just catching fish in one year he can catch 120 fish. On the other hand, if he spends all his time making huts in one year he can make 40 huts.

The answers were each gotten by dividing the total number of hrs worked (1800) by each person's rate (such as bagley's 10hr/fish).
