Senator Joseph McCarthy first accused A. the U. S. State Department of housing members of the Communist Party.

    Explanation:

In February 1950, anticommunist senator McCarthy declared at the Ohio County Women's Republican Club at Wheeling, West Virginia, that he had a list of 205 members of the Communist Party who were infiltrated in the Federal government. More specifically, he alleged these people were "working and shaping policy" in the State Department.

McCarthy later revised this claim and used number 57 instead; he did not make the list public.
