    What it can inferred what Nadine Gordimer is that the child might have died as a result of his injuries, keeping in mind that at the end of the story, the boy was presented in a really critical condition.

    Explanation:

    Having presented the previous statement, it can also be concluded that Gordimers statement toward the family's happiness is not something to entirely take into account for the fact that living "happily ever after" is not a state that a human being can actually reach because of daily situations, circumstances and even life condition.
