According to Kohlberg's theory of moral development, human beings pass through stages of moral thinking which shapes their mental development. Kohlberg believed that few females move past the fourth stage in their moral development because they were deficient in their ability to know good or bad.

There were some critics of Kohlberg's theory. Some believed the development of morals may not be in stages and may be as a result of ones environment. Another critic is that the theory is bias against females as Kohlberg didn't consider the distinction between men and women. While men are likely to make decisions based on equity and justice, women are likely to make decisions based on personal relationships and care.
