While some argue that advertising promotes materialism, others argue that it addresses a number of basic human needs. With reference to Maslow's Hierarchy, an advertisement for a high-end clothing company would likely be appealing to which of these needs?

    Maslow's theory is known as one of the most important theories of motivation. For him, the needs of human beings obey a hierarchy, that is, a scale of values to be transposed. This means that the moment the individual realizes a need, another one appears in its place, always demanding that people look for ways to satisfy it. Few, if any, people seek personal recognition and status if their basic needs are unmet.

    Esteem needs are two types: the recognition of our abilities by ourselves and the recognition of others of our ability to adapt. In general, it is the need to feel worthy, respected by oneself and others, with prestige and recognition, power, pride etc.
