Sharia is Islamic law, which is part of the faith derived from the Qur'an and hadith, the record of words and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad.

Its application today is the subject of dispute between conservative and liberal Muslims, although some aspects are widely accepted, such as its application in the banking system.

The "hudud" are the harshest punishments, reserved for sins such as adultery, ra**, homosexuality, theft and murd**.

These punishments are rarely carried out, as many offenses must be proven by confession or attested by several adult Muslim men.
