The curious term, comes from Elbridge Gerry, who was governor of Massachusetts at the beginning of the XIX century, and salamander. The governor at the time presented a district boundary proposal that included districts that looked literally like salamanders (as it happens today in several states).

Gerrymandering is done with the purpose of favoring a political party. It is a calculating process of manipulating electoral borders in order to maximize the number of seats be it for Congress or for the State Assembly. African Americans in particular, are victims of gerrymandering in states such as Maryland, North Carolina, and even New York.
