Education at the most basic level, is given from parents to children, and practically starts when the children are born. In the societal sense, education starts when people enroll in kindergarten or primary school, where they are first taught how to read and write.

    If a society wants to preserve its culture, it needs to maker sure its members are educated in the principles of that culture. For example, Japanese society is very hierarchical, and old people are very respected there. In Japanese schools, kids are taught to treat old people with the utmost respect, and to use special words (honorifics) to refer to them. Japan is also a country that values technology and engineering, and math and science are therefore heavily promoted and taught in schools.
