    This theory sees society as an organism, with functions to make it work. According to its creator, Emile Durkheim, the social norms and the social aspects are developed by a group to maintain the status quo (the order). So, all the functions inside this society are determinant to avoid any disorder, or malfunction if we use the theory's terms. So, in the case of racial issues, the Functionalism can be understood as the dominant group to create segregation to maintain its dominance over what they believe to be inferior. All the social functions would be ordered and executed to maintain the power and the political influence of a dominant social group over the others.

    For example - Jim Crow laws in the South during the 19th and 20th centuries. These laws can be seen as Functionalism, because they were created, supported and maintained by a dominant group (even if this group is small in number, these laws can keep the control) to overpower, and control an "inferior" group, according to them.
