The Abramoff scandal was a political corruption scandal that occurred in 2005.

Several federal lawmakers and their advisors were charged with acts of corruption, such as accepting bribes, gifts as well as illegal travel. Abramoff and his partner Michael Scanlon managed to charge indigenous communities $ 80 million for tasks to lobby their casino promotion interests in Congress. Abramoff faced a legal charge of fraud in the state of Florida. Several prosecutors said he bought a squad of casino ships forging documents about his financing.

A partner pleaded guilty and accepted a reduced penalty in exchange for his cooperation in the case. Abramoff faced six criminal charges and a sentence of several years in jail. Abramoff served a three-and-a-half-year sentence of his six-year sentence. He was released on December 3, 2010.

Since he was released, Abramoff has talked about corruption in politics. He has said he looks like a "moral lobbyist" and has apologized for his actions.

It was an event that generated collateral damage within the Congress and affected the elections.

Most of the legislators linked to Abramoff are Republicans, although some Democrats were also involved. This caused the population to lose a lot of credibility in the management of these officials and in the political parties they represented. However, it was a disaster that affected Republicans the most, since they are the ones that presented themselves as the party with "moral and family values."
