These peaceful means were mainly two strategic tools: international sanctions and boycotts.

The sanctions are economic punishments imposed by other countries over South Africa. The United Nations Security Council passed several sanctions during the 1960s and 1970s, among them, an oil embargo.

Boycotts are different in that they are simply a decision by a country, or citizen, not to engage in a specific type of relantioship with the country, usually a commercial relatioship (in other words, deciding not to buy things from South Africa), but it also applied to sports and cultural matters.
