The Scramble for Africa (or the Race for Africa) was the proliferation between the 1880's and the beginning of World War I of conflicting European claims to African territory during the New Imperialism period.

Britain and Europe wanted to exercise their economic and military power, focusing on slave trade.

As late as the 1870s, only ten per cent of the African continent was controlled by Western European states, with all their territories close to the coast.

The most prominent possessions were:

Angola and Mozambique, owned by Portugal; Cape Colony, owned by UK; and Algeria, owned by France.
