A 10-year-old boy who was brought to the emergency room after a skiing accident is diagnosed with a fracture of the distal end of the femur. Why is this type of fracture significant?

    Potential growth problems may result from damage to the epiphyseal plate.

    Explanation: Epiphyseal plate is a hyaline cartilage, it is part of the long bone from where new bones grow and emanate from, it is very important as it one of the main determinants of the proper growth of growing children. A damage to this bone will definitely lead to stunted or distorted growth as it regards to the bone, this fracture at the distal end of the femur is part of the Epiphyseal plate, it has to be properly treated and handled.
