Control of South Africa in the 1800s

Khoi-San rise up in an unsuccessful but protracted rebellion in the eastern districts of the Cape in what becomes known as the Third War of Dispossession between the Khoi-San of the colonial authorities

From the 1800s, European countries began to take control of coastal areas in Africa (e. g. French Algeria, the British Cape Colony in modern-day South Africa). Even so, by 1880 only small areas of the African continent were under European rule.
