Why do you think most smaller Caribbean countries were able to gain independence peacefully?

The cost of maintaining the smaller countries was relatively high (the colonizing countries had to send ships very far!) and the benefit comparatively low (less land to plant on) - so they weren't as important for the colonial powers as for example Mexico.
