    Also, he preached against luxury, profit, the depravity of the powerful and the corruption of the Catholic Church.

    The Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola words might have such a ready audience in Florence at that time because Savonarola had many followers that included well-known writers and artists, and these was seen by Florence as a credible proof that Savonarola's sermons were indeed bound to happen.
