What do symbols represent and how do they generate emotions?

The symbols in culture, have an emotional impact on groups and individuals.

The symbols can be objects, characters, they are representations of ideas.

Even though symbols mainly represent an abstract concept or a particular idea, symbols enable emotional responses in a psychological level - Symbols produce emotions, and therefore the emotional meaning of certain concept represented in a symbol is usually the expression of an idea. Let's refer to an example: The national flags when a football match, or when an international event takes place. The emotions that often are associated with the use of flags would be "feeling proud", being patriotic, having a cultural-national identity.
