In China it is believed that by honoring ancestors' spirits, the spirits will in turn protect and guide the living. To honor them, families have certain traditions like leaving out food on special occasions to welcome the ancestors' spirits home or writing the ancestors' name on tables in the family shrine as a sign of respect and honor.
