The Tet Offensive, also known as The General Offensive and Uprising of Tet Mau Than, in 1968, was the largest and most ambitious military operation launched by the Viet Cong and North Vietnam against the forces of South Vietnam and the United States. The name comes from one of the holidays, the Vietnamese New Year and it had the intention of surprising the allied forces of the South Vietnam government and the United States. They also wished to cause an uprising from the people of Vietnam by making them believe that the North was winning. Although it took them by surprise, the allied forces were able to recover and bit the Viet Cong back. It was one of the biggest defeats of the forces of the North.
