The self-perception theory states that we form an own perception of ourselves in relation to what we see in others and our environment. That perception is propense to suffer changes throughout time according to the events that occur to us.

In comparison to the cognitive dissonance theory, which states that we already have defined set of beliefs and these are put in conflict with contradictory views as a situation arises, self-perception makes it clear that a person may vary his or her beliefs with time and does not have a fixed set of ideals with remaining the same.
