A primary group is composed of people who you are close with and you personally know them, and you share a meaningful and lasting relationship with one another. An example of this type of group is a family.

A secondary group is a much larger group that you are acquainted with through a common activity or goal. They are the people that you have much less personal interactions except when there are activity gatherings. The example of this is the relationship you have with your co-workers or a club/team.
