What are some of the problems inherent in having multiple languages in one country? For example, Canada utilizes both French and English.

    At the most practical level, communicational challenges within a country can act as an impediment to commerce and industry and disrupt the nation.

    More seriously, however, multilingualism could destroy nationalism.

    A disadvantage of becoming bilingual, is that there is less opportunity to accumulate new vocabulary, unless to move to a country were the language is spoken. This causes migration and decrease in population.

    Some the causes of multilingualism in the current world include the effect of colonialism, migration of people from one place to another, intermarriages among people from different language groups, and introduction of multilingual learning systems in schools.
