During his expedition in the early 1800's, and later capture, Zebulon Pike cites the people of New Mexico as welcoming and accommodating of him. The Mexican people treated him with respect and celebrated his arrival.
It was during this expedition where Pike learned of the weakness of Spanish authority and enabled the United States to gain control of the Southwest.
