According to Kohlberg moral development theory, the pre-conventional level refers to the place of moral development where people can start to associate their action with the the consequences that they desire.

This type of perspective will make people capable in doing something that they don't like / restraining themselves in order to obtain greater reward in the future (like what Edmund did)
